Content Description

This collection contains one leather-bound photo album compiled by Dr. Minor Carson Lile between 1909 and 1917. It includes thirty-nine black and white photographs, many with captions or initials that provide a snapshot of life at the University. Photographs include images of the Routunda, Pavilion X, Birdwood, a baseball game at Lambeth Field with Minor playing third base, family photographs of the Liles participating in activities on the Lawn, and... horseback riding on Grounds. A picture of young John Allison Lile on horseback against the famed serpentine walls of UVA. Also included are photographs of Minor and his future wife, Gretchen Edgar, in Flordia and Edgar's family estate, Birdwood. Of note are two sports photographs towards the back of the album. One depicts a baseball game at Lambeth Field, roughly around 1912 or 1913, and the third baseman is potentially Minor Carson Lile. One is a shot from the Virginia at Georgetown football game on November 13, 1909. During this game, Virginia running back Archer Christian sustained a fatal head injury as a result of a tackle. An "x" is placed above Christian's head in the photograph. Many photographs of or including Minor are labeled with a handwritten "M.C.L."

Biographical / Historical

Minor Carson Lile (1888-1944) was born in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia. His father, William Minor Lile, was the first Dean of the University of Virginia Law School from 1896 to 1936. John Barbee Minor, the uncle of William Minor Lile, founded the Law School, living in Pavilion X from 1845 to 1895. Minor Carson Lile lived in Pavilion X with his family for his first twenty years of life. He attended the University of Virginia from 1908 to 1917,... where he played baseball and studied medicine. Following his time at the University of Viriginia, Lile relocated to Seattle. There, he assisted in founding the Virginia Mason Hospital in 1920, in conjunction with other University of Virginia-educated physicians. He remained in Seattle until his death in 1944.
