John W. Warner item books (-e), 1979 - 1995
Scope and Content Information
The collection consists of master copies of form letters used by Warner's office staff to respond to incoming correspondence. The books are to be used in conjunction with the microfilm as no paper copies of outgoing correspondence were kept.
A coding system based on the committees was used on each of the "items." When the senator established a position on an issue, two new "items" were prepared, each with the same text, but with different codes. No copy of the outgoing letter was kept, but the incoming letter and the worksheet were assigned a number that allowed retrieval from the index built by the computer as it prepared a response. The worksheet and letter were eventually microfilmed and the originals were destroyed.
