Kay Kato editorial cartoons
Content Description
This collection contains twelve original cartoons by Kay Kato, an illustrator and cartoonist, published in the New York Times, Liberty Magazine, the Saturday Evening Post, and other publications. The bulk of the collection contains eleven original pen and ink cartoons, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, with "Sunday Women-505" stamped on the back. These cartoons were for the Newark Sunday Star-Ledger weekly feature "On Location in New Jersey with Katy Kato." This group of cartoons reflects women active in their communities, depicting a wide range of occupations and activities like the College Women's Club of Montclair book sale, a pancake breakfast, a group of women soldering (entitled "Torch"), a bottle recycling initiative, and a series of women in medicine (drawing blood, performing heart screenings, assisting in dental examinations). The tag lines for these cartoons are not included in the drawings. The other drawing, a cartoon concept intended for a magazine cover, is graphite on paper, measuring 23 x 20.5 inches on a sheet measuring 27 x 22 inches. The image depicts the chaos and energy of a department store, Toy City, at Easter. This drawing was among a group of holiday-themed illustrations Kato drew on speculation for her regular publishers.
