Content Description
This collection contains a pen and ink cartoon on paper on paper by Jessie Gillespie. The cartoon was published in 1911 in Life Magazine, Volume 57, page 438. The work is captioned “Needs Must When Fashion Drives” and features fashionably dressed women interacting with one another on a staircase. Gillespie’s signature appears at the upper right. The verso of the cartoon features a typed caption label, Gillespie’s signature, her full name, Jessie Gillespie Willing, and her address. Gillespie (1888-1972) illustrated for books and magazines, including Life, The Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion, Mother and Child, McClure's Magazine, Childhood Education, the Sunday Magazine, Association Men, Farm and Fireside, Every Week, Children: The Magazine for Parents, and the American Magazine. She was also known for her work with the Girl Scouts. She became renowned for her silhouette illustrations throughout her career.
