Content Description
This collection contains one pen and ink on Bristol board illustration by Jessie Gillespie. This illustration, captioned “Quick John! There’s another grain!” was published on page 475 of Life magazine on March 17, 1910. The silhouette illustration scene depicts a woman instructing her new husband to pick up a final grain of rice from the floor of their honeymoon suite. The work is signed “J.G.” in the bottom right corner. There is a Life magazine copyright stamp, the written address of Gillespie’s Philadelphia residence, and printing indications on the verso. Gillespie (1888-1972) illustrated for books and magazines including Life, The Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion, Mother and Child, McClure's Magazine, Childhood Education, the Sunday Magazine, Association Men, Farm and Fireside, Every Week, Children: The Magazine for Parents, and the American Magazine. She was also known for her work with the Girl Scouts. She became renowned for her silhouette illustrations throughout her career.
