Content Description

This collection, RG 31/9 (Facilities Management/ J Murray Howard records), contains correspondence, memos, reports, financial reports and budgets, receipts, work orders, architectural drawings, photographs, syllabi, slides, calendars, diaries, newsletters, publications, student theses, floppy disks, VHS tapes, and Umatic tapes documenting the work and teaching of James Murray Howard. Howard served as the architect for the historic buildings and grounds of the University of Virginia from 1982-2002. He oversaw the comprehensive restoration program of its earliest buildings, the "academical village" designed by Thomas Jefferson, for which he received an Institute Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1995. Howard received the Historic Preservation Award from the Virginia Society of the AIA in 1994 and was named a fellow of the AIA in 1996. He also taught courses in the School of Architecture and lectured widely on his work. The collection contains Murray's records files which document these and other projects. Boxes 1-23 include files grouped by subject or project and are roughly in alphabetical order. They contain correspondence, memos, architectural drawings, reports, budgets, financial documents, photographs, and research. His work related to the Pavilions, the Rotunda, and Peabody Hall are well documented. Boxes 24-27 contain photographs of different buildings on Grounds interior and exterior shots. Box 27 contains images from the 1997 Pavilion collapse and includes images of paramedics at the scene. Box 28 contains Howard's planners and calendars from 1998-2004. Boxes 29 to 31 include extensive project files on Peabody Hall. Boxes 32 to 38 have materials kept in binders on various topics, including projects on the Academical Village and financial budgets. Box 36 contains publications by or about J. Murray Howard and resource books. Box 37 is oversize and contains architectural drawings and copies of Sanborn maps.
