This collection contains the administrative history and editorial files created while editing the Papers of Dolley Payne Madison project. It contains photocopies of correspondence to and from Dolley Payne Madison and other documents such as her will and resolutions for organizations, transcripts, editorial notes, and research. The first box is the project's administrative materials, including Dolley Payne Madison Genealogy, research files, correspondence on project development, grants and fundraising, bibliography, contracts, reviews, and advertising. The following five boxes contain folders of individual letters and project notes organized chronologically. Often appearing correspondents include Edward Coles, Anne Payne, Eliza Collins Lee, Mary E.E. Cutts, Sarah Coles Stevenson, John Payne Todd, and William C. Rives. Madison often wrote with the secretaries of state and their wives as well as different members of the Todd, Cutts, Coles, Morris, and Randolph families, among others. There is correspondence between then-current presidents, such as Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams.
