Content Description

This addition to MSS 9816, Editorial Files of the James Madison Papers Project, contains research materials gathered and used by the editorial staff to create the following Papers of James Madison volumes: Secretary of State Series, v. 1-12 to date (of a projected seventeen volume total), Presidential Series, v. 1-11 (complete), and Retirement Series, v. 1-3 to date (of a projected seven-volume total). Materials include photocopies of correspondence, diaries and journals, reports, biographical research data, and publications. The boxes are in chronological order within each series. Individual folders contain a Document Control Sheet, which staff used to track work, a photocopy of the correspondence, the created transcript, and, in some cases, additional research material. The editorial team created an inventory with detailed lists of correspondents in the boxes, which can be found in the External Documents section. Please note that the tables of contents in this project are referenced in the inventories, and it is necessary to have the appropriate series and volume to get a complete list of correspondents represented in the boxes.
