Content Description

This collection features two editorial cartoons drawn by Dorothy McKay (1904-1974), an American cartoonist. McKay was active throughout the mid-twentieth century, with her work most often appearing in Esquire. One cartoon made for Collier's magazine is from 1937. It is made with brush and ink and measures 12.5 X 11 inches on a sheet measuring 20.75 X 14.75 inches. The cartoon shows a woman in an elegant dress looking at a tray of desserts held by an impatient butler. The caption reads, "Just grab one, madam, and cut out the twittering." The other cartoon was made for Esquire in 1945 with watercolor, ink, and wash on illustration board measuring 15 X 10.5 on a sheet measuring 20 X 14 inches. The image depicts a man speaking to a woman as both look down at a monkey in a suit sleeping against a fire hydrant, illustrated for Esquire magazine. The caption reads, "He's still on his lunch hour, but I'll take the nickel." The acquisition date stamp is on the back. Both drawings are signed D. McKay.
