UVA History of Childhood, Parenting, and Family Building - addition 88
Content Description
This addition to MSS 16758, The University of Virginia Collection on the History of Childhood, Parenting, and Family Building, contains a handmade, movable, children's book created as a Christmas gift in 1944. The book is handmade with two covered boards in yellow floral cloth held by two black ties. The title page, hand-painted in black, says “Peek-A-Boo" XMAS/1944/ L.H.B." The book contains movable flaps of everyday objects that reveal surprise animals. The content features five vibrantly colored interactive scenes: a carrot atop a felt bunny; an oak leaf obscuring a felt squirrel; a ball of yarn atop a black felt cat, with two knitting needles underneath; a sailboat atop a paper duck; two doors of a vanity revealing a mirror. Aside from the title, date, and creator initials, there is no additional text in the picture book. Likely a hand-made gift for a family member.
