Biographical / Historical

The Brooks Hall women's names banner project was organized in 1990 by the Department of Anthropology, housed within Brooks Hall, in celebration of Women's Day. It is a response to the facade of Brooks Hall, built in 1870, that lists the names of 18 male scientists. The installation was carried out by women throughout the univeristy and Charlottesville community to recognize women globally and locally, past and present. The two story banners list the names of women who deserve to be remembered and revered for their ideas, work, and courage. Rather than privelege white, male, scientific discourse, this project aimed to celebrate women world-wide and the diversity of their achievements. The project members compiled a list of hundreds of women and the banner-makers selected women who were meaningful to them. The original banners were painted sheets, selected to be a symbol of virginity, housework, and childbearing.
