Scope and Contents Note
The Scotts Ferry, Albemarle County, Virginia indenture (1815; 0.03 cubic feet) is a single sheet which details the agreement of land sale between the Coles family and Samuel Dyer, both of Albemarle County. Named on the document are Walter Coles, John Coles, J. A. Coles, Tucker Coles, Edward Coles, and Samual Dyer.

Biographical Note
The Cole family were old Virginia planters and enslavers and the Walter Cole house is a historic building. The indenture is also signed by Alexander Garrett (1778-1860) who was Albemarle County's clerk of court, the clerk of the Circuit Court, and the University of Virginia's first bursar, as well as a close associate of Thomas Jefferson.
