The poetry manuscripts by Sally Calkins Wegner are for a class taught by Karl Shapiro at the University of California, while a visiting professor there, and most contain handwritten comments by Shapiro. Also present is a news clipping about Shapiro and his appearance for a reading at the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1966.

Biographical / Historical
According to a note from Wenger, Karl Shapiro wrote these critique notes while teaching as a visiting professor at the University of California. Shapiro was an American poet who was awarded the Pulitizer Prize for Poetry in 1945 for "V-Letter and Other Poems," while still serving in the military and stationed in New Guinea, and the Bollingen Prize in Poetry in 1969. He was appointed American Poet Laureate in 1946 and 1947. He also authored sixteen books of poetry. Shapiro edited "Poetry" magazine from 1948-1950. He also edited the "Prarie Schooner from 1956-1966. Shapiro attended the University of Virginia for one year (1932-1933) and Johns Hopkins University.
