Biographical / Historical
John Cowper Granbery, a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born on December 5, 1829, in Norfolk, Virginia. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of fourteen, and two years later he matriculated at Randolph-Macon College, where he graduated in 1848. For the next thirteen years he served as an itinerant preacher and missionary. In the years immediately before the Civil War he served in these positions at the University of Virginia. He was a chaplain in the Confederate Army from 1861-1865, and in 1875 was appointed acting professor of mental and moral philosophy and professor of practical theology in the Biblical department of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1882 he was elected Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was also appointed to the Board of Trustees of Vanderbilt University in 1882. He married Jennie Massie in 1858, who died a year later. He then married Ella Winston in 1862.
