Biographical / Historical

Henry J. Abraham is the James Hart Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs, and Politics, Emeritus, at the University of Virginia, specializing in constitutional law, judicial politics, civil rights and liberties, and the nature of the judicial process, being the leading authority on the Supreme Court appointment process. Professor Abraham’s Ph.D. is from the University of Pennsylvania. Abraham won the University of Virginia's Thomas Jefferson Award in 1983, the first lifetime Achievement Award of the Law and Courts section of the American Political Science Association in 1993, and the 2007 DAR Americanism Medal.

He taught at the University of Pennsylvania for 23 years and at the University of Virginia for 25. A renowned Constitutional scholar, he has authored eleven books, including Justices, Presidents, and Senators: A History of the U.S. Supreme Court Appointments from Washington to Clinton, Freedom and the Court: Civil Rights and Liberties in the United States, and The Judicial Process: An Introductory Analysis of the Courts of the United States, England, and France. He is also the author of many articles and has lectured widely abroad on United States State Department assignments between 1964 and 1991.
