William Faulkner letters
Content Description
This addition to MSS 16807, William Faulkner's collection, contains sixteen autograph letters from Faulkner to his mother, Maud Faulkner. The letters were sent during his first European trip, from August to October 1925, where he traveled to Italy, France, Switzerland, and England. At the time, Faulkner was twenty-eight years old, and his first novel, Solider's Pay, was about to be published by Boni and Liveright (February 1926). The letters are postmarked from Rapallo, Pavia, Milan, Stresa, Paris, Rouen, Amiens, Compiegne, Chantilly, London, Tunbridge Wells, and Diepe. Each letter is roughly 10.5 X 8.25 inches, written by Faulkner and signed "Billy," with three original pen and ink drawings within the text. The letters describe his travels, daily life, and writing practice.
