 Unprocessed Material — Multiple Containers
Identifier: ViU-2025-0100

Content Description

This addition to MSS 16758, The University of Virginia Collection on the History of Childhood, Parenting, and Family Building, contains four bound volumes of “Frobel Gifts,” small artistic pieces made from embroidery, paper-weaving, paper-folding, and paper-cutting. The pieces were created and compiled by Florence Tuttle Baldwin (1854-1926), a New Haven, Connecticut teacher. “Frobel Gifts,” artistic activities designed for young students using paper manipulation and sewing skills, was developed by Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852). He outlined twenty activities that could be fashioned with ordinary household and classroom materials, each varying in required skills. Baldwin compiled 210 Froebel Gift samples across the present four undated bound volumes, likely to be used as a companion guide for teaching her students.
