Content Description
This addition to MSS 16758, The University of Virginia Collection on the History of Childhood, Parenting, and Family Building, contains sketchbooks, autograph albums, handmade books, pen and ink and watercolor drawings, an illustrated letter, photographs, and scrapbooks created by children from different areas of the United States during the mid-1800s through the 1960s. These have grouped by date. Materials from the 1850s to the 1890s include a young boy's sketchbook consisting of eight pages of sketches with pencil-drawn drawings of patriotic symbols like American flags, cannons, eagles, and the initials W.B.R., a handmade autograph album cut into the shape of a boot, containing over 20 autographs and a few with verses, mostlyfrom Connecticut and a Boston area autograph book with naive artwork. Materials from roughly 1900 to 1910 include drawings by Emily Ashman captioned in ink by an adult: "Allen Anderson and his nurse Alice Sennel drawn and colored by Emily Ashman age 8 years, done summer of 1900 at Ocean Grove, N.J." also included are three original photographs, a letter dated September 6-15, 1901, from the Florence L. Smith Washington Locating Club, Chicago, Ill., a children's club, to President William McKinley, following the assassination attempt on his life, a commonplace book illustrated in pen and ink and watercolor, and a grouping of three homemade drawing books with pencil-drawn sketches of the day-to-day life of one young girl, Ethel Pratt. And the final grouping from the 1930s to the 1960s includes "The Lotus," a handmade manuscript scrapbook / magazine made by Nora Dean, Southern United States; thirty-one unnumbered pages, pen and ink and watercolor illustrations. titled "Margie's Journey," written and illustrated by Anna Lee Greenspan, nee Garber (1926-2003) from Hennepin, MN; a remembrance scrapbook given to Anna Louise Nufer, who retired as principal of New York public school #86, on by her students, and a handmade fairy story with original illustrations of the characters titled "The adventures of two fairies Lily-Bell and Firefly in Giant Land" by Alice Katy.
