Content Description

This addition to MSS 16758, The University of Virginia Collection on the History of Childhood, Parenting, and Family Building, contains two student notebooks belonging to Ida Narkaus (1889-1967) from Weston, Oregon. A hand-labeled notebook titled “Ida Narkaus Physiology” is dated January 1910 and includes class notes on physiology, anatomy, hygiene, and histography over eighty pages. The second notebook, hand-titled “Zoology," includes notes and illustrations on the care of animals and botany over seventy-nine pages. Narkaus attended Weston High School, shortened to “WHS” in both notebooks. Both notebooks include hand-written content on Weston lectures, a table of contents, illustrations to accompany described body/animal systems, and numbered lists to organize the subject matter. The second half of each buff buckram-bound notebook is blank. Ida married Henry Sunnarin in 1917 and was widowed shortly afterward. She remarried Ernest Theodore Ghormley in 1921 and died in Oregon in 1967.
