Content Description

This collection includes letters, postcards, maps, essays, clippings, pamphlets, advertisements, political campaign rosters and circulars, programs, bulletins, stationary, posters, exams, invitations, and negatives about the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and other localities within Virginia. The bulk of the collection contains materials from the 1930s and documents various regions and institutions in Virginia, including Richmond, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville. Richmond ephemera includes advertising the Miller & Rhodes department store, Commonwealth Magazine, Mosque Theatre, and other locations are present. Similar advertisements appear for the City of Lynchburg businesses and theaters. Pamphlets and brochures of Charlottesville commercial ephemera like 1930s pamphlets, programs, and brochures on Virginia landmarks (Luray Caverns, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Richmond, Bremo Plantation, Kenmore Plantation, etc.) were collected and distributed by Roy Wheeler Realty Company, as denoted on several envelopes within the collection. The University of Virginia Library records within the collection primarily relate to A.L. Hench, an English Faculty member, and John Wyllie, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at the Library and then Director of the University Libraries. Also included are materials from several other Virginia academic institutions, including Randolph-Macon Women's College, Hampton Institute, and Sweet Briar.
