The Sons and Daughters of Liberty poster
Content Description
This addition to RG-23/141 (Student Organizations/Sons and Daughters of Liberty) contains a poster found hanging in the Shannon Library. It is a satirical poster proclaiming rebels and tyrants of the day. Many of the references are pop culture and UVA-related. The Sons and Daughters of Liberty (SDL) is a semi-secret society at the University of Virginia established in 2003 as the Sons of Liberty and renamed in 2011 when it merged with the Daughters of Liberty. It is said to pursue liberty while decrying tyranny. The group posts a list of “rebels” and “tyrants” each year on Thomas Jefferson’s birthday eve. Traditionally, the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society is always listed as a tyrant because of an ongoing rivalry between the two groups.
