Ship Swift Shipping Passport
Content Description
This collection contains a shipping document signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison. It is a scalloped ship’s passport folio on vellum, dated 1801, with an engraving at the top of a sailing ship and a harbor scene and lighthouse. The document is a passport for the Ship Swift of New York, of whom Johnathan Eldridge was the master or commander and navigated by nineteen men. Daniel Elton, the Collector of the Port of New York, countersigned it. These passports, given to ships rather than individuals, were issued to U.S. vessels engaged in foreign trade.
