Content Description

This collection of RG 38 (School of Data Science) includes a narrative titled "The origins of the School of Data Science" by Rick Horwitz, a founding member of the Data Science Institute, and appendices that contain support documents referred to in the narrative. These documents include reports, Board of Visitor meeting minutes, research data, and biographical information. The narrative focuses on the initial idea and development of the idea of a cross-grounds Data Science Institute (DSI) focusing primarily on the years from 2011 to 2013. Dr. Horwitz wrote this before taking a leave of absence to start an institute in Seattle. The University of Virginia had the opportunity to transition DSI into a School of Data Science (SDS) in 2019 with a generous gift made to the University by the Quantitative Foundation.
