Rives family papers-addition 2
Content Description
This addition to MSS 2313, Rives family papers, and MSS 10596, William Cabell RivesPapers, contains nine handwritten letters of the Rives family of Nelson County, Virginia. The letters date from 1861 to 1917, although many are undated. Most are addressed from Castle Hill and Cobham, Virginia. One letter is from William Cabel Rives (1793-1868) to J.H. Reid with his recommendation for Reid to work in the government. Five pieces of writing are from Judith Page Walker Rives (1802-1882), a writer and William Cabel Rives' wife. These pieces include three poems, one essay on Accomplishment, and one sketch of Lemuel Turner, the second-largest enslaver in Nelson County before the Civil War. Titled " A specimen of Mr. Lemuel Turner's chat literatim et verbatim," the piece is written in Turner's dialect and mentions his holding 128 enslaved people before the war and his circumstances afterward. However, most of the piece focuses on Turner's recollection of fox hunting. Finally, there are three items from Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy (1863-1945): two letters from Amelie to George Barclay Rives (1874-1935) and his wife Gilsela Rives (1882-1953) as well as one sheet of Amelie's notes for an obituary for her husband, Pierre Troubetzkoy. In addition to the letters, there is a single sheet of notes on the Rives family and a copy of a 2012 article written by Barclay Rives on Judith Page Rives and her sketch of Lemuel Turner.
