This collection contains 18th, 19th, and early 20th century Jones family American historical documents and other related objects, including US Presidential documents, military commissions, correspondence, daguerreotype, and an embossed belt. An extensive itemized list of the documents and artifacts can be found in the External Links field. The Joneses are a military family whose members held commissions in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Several of the family members have the Welsh idiom ‘ap’ in their names, which means ‘son of.’ The materials contained within this collection relate to Roger Catesby Jones (1730-1800), who served in the Revolutionary War, and his sons Roger Jones (1789-1852), who served as the longest Adjutant General of the U.S. Army and whom the bulk of the contents are addressed to, and Thomas ap Catesby Jones (1790 –1858) who won distinction in the U.S. Navy. Roger Jones' sons also feature including Catesby ap Roger Jones (1821-1877) who was the commander of the ironclad CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads on the second day of battle with the USS Monitor; Charles Lucian Jones (1835-1920) served in the Confederate navy on the ironclad Tennessee, Roger Jones (1831-1889) served as Inspector General of the U.S. Army from 1888 to 1889, William Page Jones (1820-1841) and Winfield Scott Jones (1843-1902).
