Content Description

This addition to MSS 6048-d, Rutherfoord family papers, contains a letter from John Rutherfoord (1792-1866) to his son, John C. Rutherfoord (1825-1866). Rutherford was a politician and would serve as Acting Governor of Virginia from 1841-1842. At the time of the letter, he was on Virginia's State Council, and his son was attending Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) and the Virginia Military Institute. The letter begins with updates on travels on his travels from Charlottesville to Richmond and other family news. Then the letter discusses an issue that happened at the college that his son reported to him and was involved with to some degree. The nature of the event is unclear. He writes, "We were all quite distressed at the account you gave of our neighbor's unfortunate son .." He then moves on to discuss bringing him items like his dog and other items, and then he advises on approaching his schooling.
