Identifier: ViU-2021-0020

Content Description

This addition to the John Edwin Roller papers consists of 125 items of personal and official correspondence. The bulk of the collection is of the personal correspondence. Recorded in ink and pencil on varying sizes of paper, it includes 56 letters from Roller and 49 letters to him. Most of the letters are between John and his father, Peter Samuel Roller (1823-1894). Other correspondents include Johns mother Frances Allebaugh Roller, younger brother Douglas Robert Roller, sister Sarah Roller, "cousin Minnie," Geo. D.S.D. Burwell, Isaac W. Smith, J.G. Hensell, and Lawrence Royster. The 20 items of official correspondence and papers include Peter Samuel Roller obituary, November 2, 1894, quarterly performance report, notes regarding military procedures, notice of his appointment as assistant professor, acknowledgement of his acceptance of the position of Acting Jr. 2nd Lieutenant of the Company of Engineers stationed at Charleston, Special Orders granting leave "until further notice," and other letters to military officials regarding military orders or movements. The vendor arranged and created some additional description which has been maintained. The correspondence is arranged into three groups: letters from Roller, letters to Roller, and official correspondence. All the letters are organized chronologically within these groups. Each letter has a small note that includes a transcription of the correspondents, place, date, and a significant quote from the letter.
