John Bowie Ferneyhough ornithology journal
Content Description
This collection contains the ornithology journal of John Bowie Ferneyhough, who was a founding member of the Virginia Society of Ornithology. The leather journal contains birding lists made by Fernyhough on walks at and around UVa at the beginning of the 20th century. The book is composed of two sections: "Birds Identified near the University of Virginia 1913-1918, (summer residents) and "Lists of Birds nesting in Virginia." The first section includes a typed list of birds identified near the University and then handwritten records of daily bird sightings organized chronologically. The notes include information on birds observed, as well as times of the outings, locations, and people who accompanied him. Of interest are the mentions of Ludlow Griscom, a soon-to-be-famous ornithologist, who accompanied Mr. Fernyhough on walks in 1915 and 1916. The second section includes typed lists of birds and an alphabetical listing of bird varieties with information from "A catalog of Birds on the Virginias" by Wm. C. Rives.
