J. Murray Howard slides-addition 4
Content Description
This collection contains photographic slides of the University of Virginia compiled by James Murray Howard between 1983 and 2002. Howard worked as an architect for the historic buildings and grounds at the University of Virginia from 1982 until his retirement in 2002. During his tenure, he oversaw the restoration of the Academical Village’s Rotunda, Pavilion, Hotels, Range rooms, and Lawn rooms. The slides compiled by Howard document the restoration process of University of Virginia buildings, chronicling them before, during, and after the restoration efforts. The buildings photographed include all ten Pavilions, the Rotunda, Old Cabell Hall, the Anatomical Theater site, and the Hotels along the Range. Other sites separate from the Academical Village are also present. These buildings include the Dell, Birdwood Pavilion, Monroe Hall House, Shack Mountain, Poplar Forest, Monticello, Carr’s Hill, and Barboursville. The exhaustive renovation of the Academical Village spanned from 1984 to 2002, with archaeological digs, replastering, roofing, structural work, repainting, window reglazing, brick repair, and finishing all completed under Howard’s supervision. The slides of this collection offered close documentation of these processes.
