Identifier: ViU-2023-0162

Content Description

This collection contains fourteen woodcut printing blocks carved by the noted woodblock artist Julius John (J.J.) Lankes (1884-1960). Many of the blocks feature landscapes and buildings of Virginia. His woodcut of St. Paul's Church in Norfolk is included in the collection, as are several rural scenes of farmwork, also likely captured from Virginia localities. The woodcut blocks vary in size and date approximately from 1923 to 1940. Woodblocks included in publications include the frontispiece of Lankes's 1932 "A Woodcut Manual by Lankes" and a 1937 "Haying" print, which appears in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Emory University Library, and other institutions.
