Content Description

This addition to MSS 12769 Irby Cauthen papers consists of correspondence, notes, lectures, secondary literature, daybooks, awards, blue books, annual reports, syllabi, memos, newspaper clippings, audiocassettes, dissertation, slides, and photographs documenting the work of Irby Cauthen. Materials in the collection document his role as Assistant Dean and Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1958 to 1978 as well as other academic committees and professional groups as well as his documents related to his professional life as a professor of English Literature at the University of Virginia. Boxes 1 to 5 contain chronological files of professional papers in the department, box 5 also contains some people and topical files, box 6 contains topical files and personal correspondence, box 7 contains day books, a scrapbook, and some printed material, box 8 contains awards, and boxes 9 to14 contain topical files, student records, annual reports, and Cauthen's dissertation. There is an oversize folder with additional awards.

This collection is open for research. Boxes 10,11, and 13 contain student records and are subject to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) restrictions of seventy-five years from the date of creation of the record.
