Helen Joan Gift scrapbook
Content Description
This collection contains the scrapbook of Helen Joan Gift (1916-2008). Gift served in the United States Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), which later became the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Gift’s service period, 1942 to 1947, spanned the Second World War. Her experiences within the WAAC from her acceptance to subsequent promotions are documented in her scrapbook through photographs, pasted articles, postcards, letters, War Department ID, and internal memos. Letters, articles, and ephemera spanning from 1992 to 2004 are tipped in at the front portion of the scrapbook. The majority of the scrapbook’s content focuses on Gift’s time on base at Wast Lafayette, Indiana, Fort Des Moines, Iowa, Forst Custer, Michigan, and Camp Crowder, Missouri. In addition, Helen also saved notes and valentines from other WAAC women. Included are several group shots of WAAC women in uniform.
