Content Description

This collection contains Elizabeth (Gladys) McCarthy's scrapbook from her time at Syracuse University from 1920 to 1924. The scrapbook includes twenty-one original silver gelatin print photographs, notes, classmate signatures, and roughly ninety-four pieces of college ephemera documenting student life, including dance cards, a spoon, newspaper clippings, sorority membership, and academic exams. While the bulk of the scrapbook contains materials from the 1920s, a few clippings from 1969 are tipped in with notes made in pen. Many events are listed in the "Theaters and Entertainment" and "Social Function" sections, with handwritten notes about who accompanied her. These parties were hosted by Chi Omega sorority, the Women's Athletic Association, YWCA, Zeta Psi, Winchell Hall (at SUNY Cortland), and Upsilon Alpha. Tickets from a 1920 football game and Women's League event are included, as is a copy of the student newspaper, The Daily Orange, from 1924 and a 1922 copy of The Phoenix, a literary publication of Syracuse University. Program from 1924 Baccalaureate Sermon. The Phi Beta Kappa Key, Vol. 5 no.9, 1924. Exams from German, Latin, Zoology, and Math courses. Report card from 1920-1921, with English, Latin, German, Math, Zoology, Elocution, Hygiene, Gym, and Swimming courses. Handwritten note welcoming to Chi Omega sorority. 1924 typed a letter on "Syracuse in China" letterhead for a program described as "A team of Syracusans backed by Syracuse University and friends united in a medical educational and evangelistic program for West China at Chungking known as "The Syracuse Unit." Newspaper clippings of football games and players, women's swim team members, and Scenes from May Carnival. Syracuse University has enrolled women since its founding in 1870, creating rich traditions for women at the school, as seen in the items from this album.
