Content Description

This collection contains 191 digital media, including 3.5” Floppy disks, CDs, Zip disks, and 3480 Data tapes created by the Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia Library. Known as "Etext," the center played a pioneering role in utilizing technology for humanities research from 1992 to 2007. Over its fifteen-year existence, it aimed to create and maintain an internet-accessible collection of humanities documents, fostering a community proficient in developing and using digital materials for scholarly purposes. The media contains XML files, Word Documents, PDF, jpeg, png, tif, txt, html, and other files from the following projects: Jamestown Project, Salem Papers, Tom Sawyer, George Washington Papers, Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, Hench-Reed Yellow Fever Site, Red Snapper, and Ben Ray Daina Project. In addition to these project files, are backups of data and a Microsoft Publisher 2000 software disk.

Original digital media (floppy disks, zip disks, optical disks, etc) cannot be handled directly by patrons. Please contact Special Collections via our online Reference Request form, https://small.library.virginia.edu/services/reference-request, to request access to these materials. Please be aware that additional actions may be required to make these items available. Items will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis before access can be made. Depending on the size of the request, making them available may take some time. Please note that the content on the 3480 Data tapes could not be transferred off the media as we currently don't have the hardware to read the disks. 24 disks of content have also not been transferred for several reasons: 17 disks have viruses and 7 have mounting issues
