This collection contains press clippings, news releases, legislation, photographs, scrapbooks, correspondence, project files, audiocassettes, Umatics, VHS, audio reels, and the Virginian House of Delegate handbooks documenting the work of Daniel French Slaughter, Jr. (1925-1998), American politician and member of the United States House of Representatives for Virginia from 1985 to 1991. The bulk of the collection contains press clippings collected by Slaughter's office, press releases documenting Slaughter's work on committees, statements on bills and events, hiring of positions, and reports from Washington on various topics. Also included is legislation sponsored and cosponsored by Slaughter from 1986 to 1991. Most of the files contain just a copy of the bill but occasionally there are additional notes. Alongside these materials are a small amount of correspondence primarily documenting his reelection in 1986 and his resignation for health reasons in 1991. Special projects include projects related to Shenandoah, HOV lanes, postal patrons, and court buildings. His school art competition for the 7th Congressional District is well documented with packets for the schools, correspondence regarding the competition, and scrapbooks documenting the program and the art shows. The photographs document groups of constituents, meetings with other officials, and promotional headshots of Slaughter. The audiovisual materials primarily document official business including public meetings at various towns in Virginia, House floor coverage, and spots on news programs. Also included are Virginia House Delegate handbooks from the 1970's when he served as Virginia House of Delegate from 1958 to 1978 and a metal nameplate.
