Content Description

This collection contains an amateur, home-made newspaper, consisting of four loose sheets measuring 4.25 X 3 inches, likely created somewhere near Richmond, Virginia. The work has news-like stories, likely involving named locals or members of the author's or authors' neighborhood. The nameplate section of the first page includes the title and a subtitle section, divided into two columns, with different stories featured in each column. All the following pages have no divide and a heading of "O Moonshine" with the last page titled "Starry Mooshine." The story in the first column appears to read: "C. Harriet on the eve of Thursday last. A Miss Harriet Archer dauter [sic] of a Mr. Grand Archer told Mr. William Cox of Centralia 'they are both Gentlemen of color." Another story mentions someone from Fluvanna; both Centralia and Fluvanna are relatively close to Richmond. Other stories include a woman taking quinine for the shakes, a humor page with jokes, a discussion of a literary society meeting, an editor's note, and an advertisement for "Little Joker tobacco," among others. The last page gives the following notice: "The 'Star' has 'gone down the river' and the 'O Moonshine' has taken its place. It is to be edited monthly at the 'Star' office. And go on as if nothing has happened and as if it was the 'Star' instead of 'O Moonshine.'" This notice was signed by a "Py Shinnany Hookie," a comedic pseudonym. The 'Star' may be a reference to the Richmond Star newspaper.
