Birdwood historic records
Content Description
This collection contains the records maintained by the School for Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) on Birdwood. Birdwood is a Charlottesville, Virginia plantation built around the 1820s on Ivy Road that the University of Virginia acquired in the 1960s and used to support conferences and SCPS programs in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the University added a golf course, and it is primarily used in that capacity today. SCPS moved to Zehmer Hall and was located there until 2024 when they moved to Old Ivy Road. As part of their time at Birdwood, the administrative staff at SCPS accumulated some paper files related to the history of Birdwood. This material likely informed SCPS’s interpretation of Birdwood to their residential students. These records span from 1955 to 1999 and document the upkeep and renovation records for the Birdwood mansion, the Birdwood Pavilion, a clubhouse near the 1830 mansion, and the grounds. Materials include correspondence, memos, drawings and plans, inventories, deeds, maps, financial documents, receipts, and photographs. Also included are brochures, pamphlets, fliers on Birdwood's history and grounds, and receipts for guests and events at Birdwood. In addition to Birdwood's records are maintenance logs and renovation records for Zehmer Hall, documents on the honor code at UVA, and a pewter tray with “Distinguished Faculty Speaker” etched into it.
