 Unprocessed Material
Identifier: ViU-2021-0033

Content Description

This collection contains the 1798 bill of sale for an eight year old Creole boy named Jean Baptiste from Port-au-Prince on the Caribebean island of Saint Domingue (now Haiti). It was written by the Bordeaux-born merchant Arnaud André Robertjot Lartgue (1740-1826). A prominent planter on Saint-Domingue, Arnaud Roberjot Lartigue seems to have moved after the Haitian Revolution to the Danish island of St. Thomas where he served as agent for the French government.
