Identifier: ViU-2023-0200

Content Description

This collection contains the letters of Andrew Craig, a University of Virginia research student and graduate instructor in English History in 1971-72, primarily received from Professor Martin Havran. The letters are from 1970 to 1974, which covers a period preceding, during, and after Craig's time at the University of Virginia. Craig took up a research position in Charlottesville after graduating from St Andrews in 1971, and after that year, departed for Edinburgh to complete his history PhD. He kept in touch with Martin Havran until the mid-'70s. Havran continued to advise and encourage Craig's historical research, and these personal letters are primarily concerned with that advisement and support. Martin also assisted in the publication of Craig's prize essay in Essays in History in 1972. Thirteen letters are from Havan, and three are departmental letters from Merrill D. Peterson, Chair of the Department of History, welcoming Craig to the department.
