Alderman Press proof copies of Marionettes by William Faulkner
Content Description
This addition to RG 12/7/1.031, University Library/Rare Book Department/ Alderman Press Broadsides, contains three sheets of proof copies of the title page and preliminary text for the first edition of Faulkner’s play "Marionettes," printed on the Alderman Press from June 4 to 10, 1975. The proof copy was published by the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia and the University Press of Virginia. One sheet is titled “The Marionettes”, with William Faulkner’s name and publication information printed beneath. The second sheet quotes a 1932 Faulkner letter to William Green, within which he states, “I wrote a play by that name once. It was never printed. I made and bound 6 copies by hand. I signed none of them. There may also be an mss. It was long ago and I dont remember.” The final sheet identifies the typeset font of the Alderman Press copy, the publication date of June 1975, the press at which the copies were printed (Garamond Press, Baltimore), and the number of copies that were distributed. William Faulkner wrote “Marionettes” as a student at the University of Mississippi in 1920.
