Administration, Operations, and Extraneous Records-addition 3 Honor Men artwork
Content Description
This addition to RG 30/8, Administration, Operations, and Extraneous Records/ Art Work contains an artwork created by Mrs. Lindsay Hay in honor of her father, James Hay Jr. The artwork consists of five distinct pieces: two colored engravings of views of the University of Virginia made by the artist Don Swann: one of the Rotunda and the other the West Colonnades; the Hays family's copy of the "Honor Men"; a purple feather; and a dedication noting that the gift was made in honor of her father and presented to the University by The Society of the Purple Shadows. The Purples Shadows are a secret society at the University of Virginia founded in 1963 with two guiding tenets to support the Honor System and to encourage activities that “enhance the University’s tradition of excellence.” The society recognizes members of the UVA community with a purple goose quill and with letters written in purple ink. Originally, this item was one framed work in matt. Due to some water damage to the matt and to ensure for safer handling, the items were removed and placed in a folder.
