Scope and Contents
This ledger was purchased from Alderman Library in June of 1985. It consists of one volume divided in what appear to be client accounts, and some subdivisions titled: “Commissioner in Chancery,” Cash Account (General), Cash Account (Individual).
This book was purchased from Alderman Library, which bought it from Louis Ginsberg, Old Books and Old Prints, Box 1502, Petersburg, VA 23805 in June of 1985.

Biographical / Historical
John Wilson Stephenson was born in Monterey, Highland County, Virginia, 24 July 1850. He graduated from Roanoke College in 1872 and later enrolled as a law student at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1874. That same year he began practicing law in Bath County, where he continued to practice until his death in September of 1921. In 1887 he became Commonwealth Attorney for Bath County, a position that he held for sixteen years. In 1905 he was elected to the House of Delegates of the Virginia Legislature representing Bath, Highland, and Rockbridge Counties. From 1916-1920 he was the Chairman of the Committee on Courts and Justice. Mr. Stephenson died in September 1921.
