Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection relates to the Pediatric Nephrology Seminars which José Strauss chaired at the University of Miami from 1974-2006. Other materials include a curriculum vitae and biographical sketch of José Strauss, a memorial photo book, awards and certificates, and publications. Also present are several items related to the acclaimed Mexican pediatric nephrologist Gustavo Gordillo Paniagua (1923-2012). 7 books belonging to José Strauss... were also donated with his papers, these will be cataloged into the rare books collection at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. Biographical / Historical

José Strauss received his M.D. from the University of Buenos Aires Medical School in Argentinia, in 1955. He completed pediatrics fellowships at the State University of New York in Brooklyn and Columbia University and served on the faculty at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. In 1971, he began a long tenure at the University of Miami, where he served as a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Nephrology from 1971-2006.... Dr. Strauss was also the Chairman of the University of Miami's Pediatric Nephrology Seminars from 1974-2006. Throughout his career, he received many international awards and honors and published widely on topics related to pediatric nephrology. In 2006, Dr. Strauss was the recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Henry L. Barnett, M.D. Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of pediatric nephrology. Dr. Strauss passed away in 2017.
