Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two folders and (21) pamphlets and booklets of information regarding nursing. One folder has (28) cardboard cutouts of various foods with the dietary information printed on the back. The other folder contains a letter from Senator John Warner, an interoffice communication regarding Mobile Chest Survey, Drug Preparation Guide sheets and rules from the Cardiac Monitoring Unit at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Nurse Burton was a 1952 Diploma Graduate at UVA School of Nursing but most of the notes are dated in the mid- 1970s.

Biographical / Historical

Maxine Burton was a graduate of the UVA School of Nursing Diploma Program and the BSN Program as well as the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. She worked in the premature nurseries at UVA Hospital and at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She became an occupational health nurse and later a family nurse practitioner serving in a wellness-community health role for 25 years. During her practice, she spoke annually to community health classes and hosted graduate students from the School of Nursing and the Curry School of Education for their practical work. After retirement, she served on the Board of Directors for Hospice of the Piedmont and traveled the world with her husband, Henry.
