Dixon Evans letter to James Evans about Dixon's murder of an enslaved person
Autographed signed letter from Dixon Evans to his brother James Evans in Fayetteville, North Carolina with his acccount of his shooting, and killing an unnamed enslaved person from Marion, South Carolina. The enslaved person was trying to obtain food from the dairy and smokehouse. Dixon Evans was being sued by Nathaniel Evans who was the owner of the enslaved person. Dixon Evans blames the enslaved person for Dixon's own murderous actions.

Gay family papers
The Gay family papers (1829-1922; 0.5 cubic feet) document the lives of members of the Gay family of Staunton, Virginia. The collection contains approximately 200 letters written by and to family members, with about one-third of the letters written by Private Charles Wyndham Gay (1841-1862) of the Confederate Army to his parents. Other letters include those from Alexandre Etienne de Clouet, a Louisiana Deputy to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States.
George B. Eager Jr. papers
The George B. Eager collection fills only one folder and spans less than one year, 1933. As the first letter indicates, Eager solicited alumni to write to the Rector and Visitors of the University endorsing the appointment of John L. Newcomb as president. The rest of the collection is mostly letters from alumni endorsing Newcomb. Correspondence and clippings at the end of the file indicate that Eager was successful.

The Grover family papers (1825-1917; 0.04 cubic feet) also includes papers from the Watts and Harris families. This collection contains receipts, a deed of gift for enslaved people (Dolly, and children Nancy, Elvira, and James from Mary Harris to Rosa M. N. Harris, circa 1845-47), a newspaper clipping of Preston Watt, and ration books of Bettie and William Grover. The papers came in a fabric packet stamped, “The Virginia Fire and Marine Insurance Co. of Richmond, VA” which is included.
