 Collection
Identifier: MS-64

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of seven educational pull-down wall charts dating from approximately 1945-1950. The charts are part of the Denoyer-Geppert Anatomy Series and are credited to editor, Otto F. Kampmeier, PhD, MD, of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and artist, P.M. Lariviere. The charts were used in the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Anatomy Laboratory for instruction purposes. They contain color illustrations of various anatomical features and systems of the human body. The charts are made of paper and cloth and are attached to wooden dowels from which they were once hung on wall-mounted fixtures.

Biographical / Historical

Denoyer-Geppert International is an Illinois-based manufacturer of scientific models, charts, and simulators, which are produced primarily as teaching tools for health and science education with a focus on human anatomy, biology, and chemistry. Originally known as The Denoyer-Geppert Company, the business was founded by L. Philip Denoyer and Otto E. Geppert in 1916 and initially specialized in geographical maps and globes. The company shifted its focus to manufacturing scientific charts and models exclusively after being purchased and later resold by Rand McNally in 1985.

The artwork on the charts in this collection is by Pauline M. Lariviere (1906-1988), a French-Canadian painter and medical illustrator. Lariviere studied art in Montreal and London before studying medical illustration at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine under Max Bodel. Her work has appeared in nursing and medical textbooks, including editions of Grey’s Anatomy. Lariviere’s original images for the Denoyer-Geppert anatomical charts were likely created during the 1940s and were done in oil paint, a favorite medium of the artist and one well-suited to her bold and expressive style.
