Biographical Note

John T. Casteen was the seventh president of the University of Virginia, serving from 1990 to 2010. He was the second-longest serving president of the University and started his tenure after presiding as president of the University of Connecticut for five years. Prior to this, he taught at the University of California (Berkeley), the University of Virginia, and served as a UVA admissions dean. Casteen also served as Virginia's Secretary of Education from 1982 to 1985. After his tenure as UVA's president, he returned to teaching at the University of Virginia as a professor of English until his retirement in 2021.
