Content Description

This collection contains the watercolor of a ruby crowned kinglet by the artist Maud Falkner (the mother of famous William Faulkner). The inscription on the back of the frame says "Watercolor by "Grandma Falkner," Oxford, Mississippi, given to Elsie McDougal Harding, Oct. 19th Bd gift from Mary Kate Heard, Oxford, Miss."

Biographical / Historical

Maud Butler Falkner (1871-1960)was the mother of famous William Faulkner. She was married to Murry Cuthbert Falkner and had four sons, William, Murry Charles "Jack", John, and Dean. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and thought of herself as a self supporting artist. She painted all of her life, particularly copies of old masters. She also commissioned portraits.
