Content Description

This collection contains University of Virginia clippings, scrapbook pages and ephemera collected by P.J. Beattie Jr, a graduate from the class of 1937. The collection includes two directories spanning the academic years 1935 to 1937 with Beattie's name handwritten at the top of each directory, a program from the University of Virginia graduating exercises dated June 15, 1942, a blue felt pennant flag with the University of Virginia seal, and articles clipped from alumni publications on the University of Virginia including an article on William Lambeth, a physical education faculty member, Easter Week festivities, the beauty of the campus, and the 1940 Virginia football team. Depictions of a student's daily life as well as a description of Jefferson's Serpentine Walls are included in these clippings. In addition are four scrapbook pages from 1936 and 1937 with photographs documenting student life at the University of Virginia. Photographs are captioned with the name of students and staffand events and dates. Of interest is a photograph of Phil Porter, a ragtime musician Albemarle county resident who worked for the was the Chi Phi fraternity houseman and events and dates.

Biographical / Historical

Philip Joseph Beattie Jr. (1916-2000) was born in Richmond, Virginia and attended the University of Virginia where he earned a BA from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1937. He served and earned a senior officer rank in the United States Navy from from 1942 to 1951. He married Rebecca Morgan in 1943 in Charleston, West Virginia where they lived and had children. He worked in realty and incorporated and was president of the Beattie-Firth Inc Realtors in 1949. He died in Charlston, West Virginia at the age of 84.
