[Samuel Smith] to [ ? ], fragment, discusses the Miranda Case which concerns Francisco de Miranda who fought for Venezuelan independence in 1806 but was defeated. The letter indicates that Miranda had met with both [James] Madison and President [Jefferson] in the hopes of gaining support for his rebellion. After he was defeated and his ship, The Leander, was taken captive, several US Citizens - notably Samual Ogden and William Smith - were tried.
